Tell Your Story: Alexa

We appreciate Alexa doing an interview with Equal Opportunities for Students, and the Tell Your Story series.

Her interview is here.

She brings up a good point about financial discrepancies in education. Schools across nearby districts often greatly vary by funding, and that funding can even vary from school to school in the same district. Typically the schools with lower funding are worse schools, that are assigned to children from low income areas. These low income schools lack the resources of higher end schools, which denies these students opportunities in ways that aren’t always obvious: In the straightforward sense, these schools have less funding, so they have less technology, which means all of the students in lower income schools automatically have less opportunities for activities which could vastly benefit their learning. In the less obvious sense, schools without funding can’t afford to pay teachers as much as schools with better funding, meaning the best teachers typically take the higher pay at schools with larger budgets. This puts low income students at a further disadvantage. What do you think should be done to give students more equal opportunities in education?
