More about Ava:

Hi, my name is Ava Wright and my home town is National City, Ca but I currently live in Chula Vista, Ca and attend Chula Vista Middle School in the 7th grade. I am Black and White and I prefer not to say what my disability is because it’s not important and doesn’t define me. I’m passionate about disability justice because I feel like it’s not fair that other people are getting treated differently just because they have a disability. When I was in elementary, people called me stupid or retarded just because I didn’t know how to do math as well as they do or just because I needed extra help.

I am currently the Cavalier Captain at Chula Vista Middle in my advisory class. I feel like I came a long way and I accomplished more. I’m proud of all the things I did to help myself be more successful. Instead of listening to the negative things I heard, I pushed myself to do well and get better. It’s been hard but I take baby steps. I feel like I’ve come a long way. For me it’s not about the award. I am passionate about helping others who have disabilities and who people make fun of. I feel stronger and more accomplished and I want to help others feel that way, too. Instead of sitting there taking rude comments and putting themselves down because of their situation.
